Fluid Vibration Isolation & Damping

Fluid systems can be used to either isolate vibration at a particular frequency or to dramatically improve damping at a particular frequency. The former use is most common in aerospace systems to achieve good vibration isolation at key excitation frequencies. The latter use is common in automotive or truck engine mounts, where the engine bounce at roughly 10 Hertz needs to be highly damped without introducing very poor high frequency vibration isolation. This approach is also used in helicopter rotor dampers to improve stability in some flight conditions.

The use of a fluid circuit achieves the performance of a much larger device in a lightweight, compact package. Fluid devices can also be used to control roll and torsional motion in aerospace and ground vehicle engines.
